After a partnership at one of Chicago’s largest law firms, Thomas E. Patterson started the Patterson Law Firm in 2000 with eight clients. Designations as a pre-eminent lawyer by the oldest lawyer rating service and leading lawyer and super lawyer assessments by more recent rating organizations resulted from the high quality of his work representing businesses, professionals, and entrepreneurs in their business lawsuits.

He has represented a triple murderer, the Boy Scouts, churches, a strip club owner, and the late David L. Paul in a successful defense against Chemical Bank of New York on a personal guaranty. Mostly he represents shareholders and LLC-members in shareholder or LLC-member lawsuits, plaintiffs who need to sue their lawyers or accountants for malpractice, and policyholders who have been denied insurance coverage.

In January and February, 2020, right before the pandemic, his firm won a $32.3 million verdict against a very large law firm, settled a case against a large accounting firm after two weeks of trial, and won or settled two additional cases. In 2021, the firm settled a lawsuit brought by a victim of former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. It has represented large companies such as Gogo in litigation related to their patents.
